Silverspring is a community in northeast Saskatoon and predominantly consists of single-family homes. It’s a bit of a unique neighbourhood in that it is one of few communities in the world that feature a Natural Grassland in an urban community. The Saskatoon Natural Grasslands is a 34-acre ecosystem with grasses, plants, insects and animals and is home to almost 300 different plants and animals.
Along with the communities parks and grasslands, Silverspring also borders the Northeast Swale, Forestry Farm Park & Zoo and the University of Saskatchewan North Management Area. Residents are able to enjoy walks throughout the community and enjoy the views of parks and open space, without the worry of excessive urban development. It’s just a short walk to the walking and cycling paths along the South Saskatchewan River and the off-leash recreation area.
There are two elementary schools located in Sutherland, Mother Theresa School and Silverspring School. High School aged children attend either St. Joseph High School or Centennial Collegiate, both located in University Heights Suburban Centre.
There are no commercial businesses located in Silverspring, but there are a number of amenities available in neighbouring communities. Preston Crossing offers a variety of retail and dining options, including Walmart, Sobeys, and Chili’s. A recent expansion to the area has seen a number of new businesses being added such as Goodlife Fitness and Saskatoon’s first Bed, Bath and Beyond. More business options are available along Central Avenue and in the University Heights Suburban Centre.
